Sub70
Direct To Consumer. When we see these words we think of affordable products outside of the normal off the shelf brands that we can order online and have quickly delivered to our doorstep at a fraction of the cost. Usually lacking in marketing, customer service, product R&D, base options and customization, Sub70 has crushed the status quo. Sitting alone at the top, no other DTC provides the level of customer service, customization and tour proven designs as Sub70 does. Owner Jason Hiland has built a juggernaught that presistently proves that the kings crown will not easily be taken from their head.
The Request and The Custom 005
I have been all over the board with putters, every style and every brand. Rarely do I see a putter I have not tested. Most recently and for the longest of times, I have been using a Bettinardi SS28 armlock putter. It features Bettinardi's RCT face milling and has most of the times been great for my putting needs except two main issues, I dont like the look of the double bend shaft at address and lack of weight control outside of lead tape. After seeing the array of putters SUB70 has to offer, I reached out to them with an inquiry, "Could you put a really long plumbers neck on one of your 005 Wide Blade putters?".
Before the day was out, I had a reply
"That's not something we have available on our normal customizations, but let us talk to our club builders and see if they can do it" -Sub70
by the end of the following day a follow up email popped up in my inbox saying
"We can do it, how long of a neck is long enough? Did you want the 005 custom head or standard 005 head, the 005 custom has more room for engraving. What about Engraving? What color paint fills? Let us know your length, lie and grip preferences".-Sub70
By the next day, the questions they asked me were answered, order was sent and my excitement rose. Within one week, and for roughly HALF of the cost of a new Bettinardi or Scotty Cameron Putter, my new weapon arrived. The king of putters I have aptly named Godzookie.
Overall Review
Shipped in a premium box, built with premium materials, milled face, full customization on a premium shaft, an included FULL weight kit and Garsen grip; the putter exudes refinement, performance and customer satisfaction. I sank all of my first five 8+ foot putts and immediately knew I had something special in my grasp. The fully engraved 1 of 1 sole is beautiful and an attention grabber. These custom putters start at $199 USD and come with a full weight kit (6 extra weights and tool) for free that should not be overlooked, a stock Scotty Cameron goes for anywhere between $350-$450 new and you will have to pay another $80-$100 to build a matching weight kit that SUB70 includes. Speaking to the basic options, Sub70 gives you a plethora. From shafts to grips, you have a littany of options at your fingertips for either free or a very minor upcharge compared to other companies upcharges for much less of a selection. If you go the full custom route, engraving and paintfill are limited only to your dreams and are a welcome challenge for Sub70. My game is driving, Im a 320 carry type of player with my driver that seldomly gets comfortable with his putter, after playing a handful of rounds with it, making minor tweaks, I have become insanely comfortable with my putting and thanks to Sub70 shot my first 66 last week. Performance is sublime, the feel and precision mirror the top brands. If you are in the market for a new putter or a golf gift for your special someone, I implore you to reach out to Sub70 and give their customization a whirl. Also, the customization is not limited to putters either.
Conclusion, Score and Smacktalk
For once, I have no Smack to Talk. A rare 10/10. A difficult score to achieve but you can tell an owner puts his passion into his company when the products and crew making them reflect that love and the products flat out deliver at a price the everyday golfer can afford. This review was born from reflection of perfection, I wasnt sent some product for free to bolster an unbiased review, nor did I tell them they would be reviewed. I paid for this putter and it beat out every $400+ dollar putter I have purchased and now store in my garage and makes me wonder why anyone would pay that for a putter unless it was a brand name necessity. They have recently released a 3D printed driver and two new models of wedges (TAIII V2 and SK) that Im now more eager than ever to get my hands on and are likely making my Callaway Quantum TD and Vokey Wedges tremble. As my Bettinardi irons wear away i'll probably be replacing them with a set of Sub70 irons soon as well, if those end up making me play any better, I might be looking at a Korn Ferry Tour run in the near future. Keep up the great work and customer service Jason and crew. V2 of the new site is still under development but check back soon for a new look and massive amount of reviews.
